Whether you’re donning a bikini or a mini this summer, keep your legs hair free and smooth. Here’s the 411 on two long-lasting hair removal systems.

Want something permanent, then try laser hair removal. In only 4-6 sessions, you’ll be completely hair free. The sessions last up to an hour and are scheduled approximately 3 months apart. Expect to shave somewhat between initial sessions. Avoid tanning, especially 2-3 weeks prior to treatment otherwise the doctor will not treat you. And you’re done. This “regular” hair removal treatment is permanent but hormonal changes such as menopause and pregnancy can stimulate hair growth. If this happens, make sure to schedule maintenance treatments.

At one time, laser hair removal was only limited to Caucasians, while ethnic groups with darker skin tones had to rule out treatment due to side effects that included pigmentation. Thankfully, that’s changed! According to American Medical Aesthetics (AMA), most people with dark hair and fairer skin can be treated with Gentle Lase, and people with darker skin, generally African Americans, are treated with ND Yag.

This treatment can be a bit costly though. It’s approximately $500/session for either the top or bottom and $1000/session for full leg. However, AMA does offer a special discount package. Amacorp.com.

If you’re a little short on cash, an affordable alternative to laser hair removal is the Emjoi Light Caress Rechargeable epilator. It has 24karat gold plated hypoallergenic tweezer discs that removes hair from the roots without the “ouch” factor.

Unlike waxing, where you have to wait for all the hair to grow back and shave in between appointments, the Light Caress removes hair from the root as short as 0.5mm, so you’ll never have to use any other product again. No more shaving creams, no more razors, no more hot messy wax, and no more appointments!

The Light Caress can be used on the legs, arms, underarms, bikini line and even on the face. It features a bright illuminating light for hard to see hair, a rubberized grip making it comfortable and easy to hold, a carrying pouch, adapter, cleaning brush and massaging finger attachment. Emjoi.com, $89.95.

Final Recommendation: Razors and waxing are a thing of the past. Lasers and epilators are convenient and cost-effective.
