Four easy ways to get healthy summer hair

By Julie Wiegan

Vidal Sasson protégé, Riccardo Maggiore, of the New York based Riccardo Maggiore Salon, whose clients include ageless style icons Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Lopez, gives us four easy tips to keep hair healthy this summer.

GET A GOOD HAIRCUT
Split ends or porous hair can cause further damage because of its quick absorption of the sun’s rays, chlorine, and salt water. Get hair into excellent shape with a thorough haircut or trim. If hair is in really bad condition, consider a shock, reconditioning, or hydrating treatment.

USE SPF ON HAIR
While soaking up the sun, be sure to use hair products that provide some UV protection, or you may end up with really dry, broken strands at the end of the season. Use sun specific products with a UV protectant, like Riccardo Maggiore Gel-Vitale Moisturizing Styling Gel, which contains sunscreen agents to protect hair from damaging UV rays. You can also wear large floppy hats to protect your hair and scalp from the sun.

Met Ball 2010 hair and makeup trends

By Sara Moore

Hollywood A-listers headed east to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art to help raise funds for the opening of the museum’s 2010 Costume Institute Exhibit. Leading ladies that included Kate Hudson and Sienna Miller were primed to perfection by their hairstylists and makeup artists for the MET Ball. Find out how to get their looks with these step-by-step instructions straight from their stylists.

“The theme of this year’s Met Ball was ‘American Woman,’ and after seeing Rachel’s Oscar de la Renta dress I knew that we should keep her hair down and sexy,” Mark Townsend said of British actress Rachel Weisz.

1. Add a few drops of Moroccanoil Treatment to hair to condition and strengthen it while reducing drying time. This helps ensure a shiny, healthy look.
2. Blow dry hair with a medium-sized, round brush.
3. When hair is completely dry, use a 1 3/4-inch curling iron and roll the hair from the ends to the roots in the iron. This technique creates more volume at the bottom of the hair instead of at the roots.
4. When the hair is curled, brush it out with a flat brush.
5. Tame flyaway hairs with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray on the top section of hair and then use Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray on the ends to fight the New York City humidity and frizz. This spray helped enhance Rachel’s highlights and created amazing shine that lasted all night.

“Rachel was so happy with the outcome of her hair and felt it was soft and sexy with a bit of a classic 70’s vibe,” he said.

Sienna Miller’s hairstylist, John D., said he was strongly inspired by the classic, sensual beauty of Brigitte Bardot.

1. Prep slightly damp hair with Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream, applying a small amount on the palm of
your hand then finger-combing it throughout the hair. It hydrates and protects the hair and helps counteract the humidity in the air and prevent frizz.
2. Do a super-clean, simple blowout using a flat bristle brush. With Sienna, “I wanted to smooth out any natural wave yet still leave a bit of volume at the root,” he said.
3. After the hair was dry, do a messy center part, then pull back the front part of hair, and fasten half into an undone half-upstyle. Leave a bit of volume at the crown so it looks slightly messy, yet classically Bardot.
4. “Since the weather was very humid in New York and the red carpet happened between rainstorms, I had to rely on a spray I could trust to keep her style in place and under control. So I finished the look with new Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray, which is strong enough to keep the style in place and tame frizz, but soft enough to make sure Sienna’s hair looked natural and beautiful.”

Bang it up!

By Julie Wiegan

Bangs never go out of style, but do you know what suits your face best? Celebrity stylist Antonio Prieto, who counts Eva Longoria, Caroline Murphy, and Marisa Tomei among his clients breaks it down for us by face shape.

DIAMOND (Scarlett Johansson)
This shape is basically an angular oval. A short side-swept bang works best with this face shape as it softens the angular areas.

OBLONG (Angelina Jolie)
The goal here is to create width through the side of the face since this face shape is long and narrow – a longer side-swept bang is perfect. But be careful, the length of the bang is the most important factor. Make sure the bangs fall on or near the cheekbone.

TRIANGLE (Kate Hudson)
Bangs are a great idea for this face shape because of its narrow forehead and fuller jaw line. Bangs would create width through the forehead.

2010 Oscar Awards red carpet hairstyles

By Tricia Stevens

Enzo Angileri was inspired by the classic shape of Charlize Theron’s dress to create a style that was delicate and enduring. “To create this look I needed a very smooth texture and lots of natural-looking shine,” said Angileri.

1. Use new argan oil-infused Moroccanoil Light, made especially for fine and light colored hair, on wet strands before blow drying to ensure the hair itself looked perfected. “After that about 50% of my work was done and I had a texture that was workable, healthy-looking and naturally beautiful.”
2. To create the low, classic bun, roll hair around clockwise. Hold in place with several bobby pins.
3. Spray with a light misting of Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray to give hair an extra touch of red carpet glamour for the cameras.
4. Set the look with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray for a firm, flexible hold.

Lona Vigi gave Cameron Diaz a style that was reminiscent of the Old Hollywood glamor of Veronica Lake but with a modern twist.

1. Spray volumizer on hair.
2. Blow dry hair with Velecta Paramount Paris TGR 4000i with the ionics turned off. This setting helps build volume. Take small sections of hair and using a medium round bristle brush, blowdry the
hair back and up using high velocity and heat.
3. Set the hair by turning on both the ionics switch and cool button to lock in curls and add shine.
4. Free the barrel curls and hold each one in place with a pin.
5. Wait a few minutes and then brush out the hair to create a loose, soft wave pattern.
6. Bring one side behind the ear and the other forward toward the face.
7. Finish with a light misting of hairspray.
