Robyne Robinson debuts ROX jewelry line in Los Angeles

By Abbey Khan

Popular Minneapolis newscaster and jewelry designer, Robyne Robinson, showed off pieces from her ROX Spring 2010 collection in Los Angeles at the El Bar on Saturday. Celebrities that included Alice Greczyn of Lincoln Heights and Carolyn Hennesy of Cougar Town picked out pieces to wear to red carpet events. Greczyn walked out wearing large, gold hoop earrings with Mother of Pearl leaves, Carnelian, Goldstone and Freshwater pearls while Hennesy took home a Carnelian and Smoke Quartz rosary necklace with an Ethiopian Coptic cross.

Robinson’s inspiration comes from the artisans of Ancient Egypt. “I love using semi-precious stones in my jewelry – amber, carnelian, jade — there are so many different types of rocks and stones that have been used for health, beauty, spirituality and trade, from the Pharaohs until today,” she said.

Instead of using boxes, the jewelry was put in tea bags that were made by South African women living in townships just outside of Pretoria. Since Robinson supports free trade, all the money for the tea bags goes right back to the women, who then give the money to the children of ‘Shoshunguve’ and missionary work “for a better future in the new South Africa.” Learn more about these women at BagsByHand.Blogspot.com.

Fashion for Life 2009 honors David Meister

By Sara Moore

On Sunday, Los Angeles based designer David Meister was honored with the Fashion for Life 2009 Vision Award for his contributions to Southern California style. Melissa Rivers hosted the annual event to help raise money for Friendly House, the oldest substance abuse recovery home for women in Los Angeles.

“It is an honor to be receiving the Fashion for Life Vision Award. I am a big believer in giving back and understand how important it is to enable and empower people who are trying to change their lives for the better. Friendly House embodies this philosophy and accepts everyone for who they are and recognizes the fact that in order to help themselves, they need a support system. Friendly House provides women in need with the essentials – a home, food and treatment. It is a privilege to support and be a part of raising awareness and funds so they can continue their mission,” said Meister.

In addition to the silent auction, guests enjoyed fashion shows by honoree David Meister, Trina Turk, Ina Soltani and Single. Just some of the celebrity guests in attendance were Melora Hardin, Leslie Bibb, Valerie Bertinelli, Viola Davis and Alison Brie, all of whom wore David Meister designs to the event. Charlie Sheen and his wife Brooke Mueller-Sheen also came out to support the charity and enjoy the fashion show.
