What to Expect When You’re Expecting is inspired by the book of the same name. The Lionsgate comedy feature will be in theaters nationwide on May 11, 2012, just in time for Mother’s Day.

Carano stars as Mallory Kane, a highly trained operative for a government security contractor who is double-crossed and tries to uncover the truth to save her life. I found out some interesting things, one of which is that Carano really can take a punch, or the flu that is. While shooting a hotel scene for two days with Michael Fassbender, she was dealing with the stomach flu and throwing up every 15 minutes or so, but you’ll never see vomit in that scene, just a few bruises.

I didn’t even realize it until Soderbergh mentioned it, but there was no music during the fight scenes. This was so the audience could really feel what the actors were doing. Soderbergh made this film with Carano in mind after seeing one of her fights on CBS and thought it was important to cast her rather than just an actress because then it didn’t “necessitate cheating” by bring on stunt doubles. Rather, the MMA star performed her own stunts. Carano is not only the star of the film, she is the only professional fighter, and female in the film. So what did it feel like for the men who had to do fight scenes with Carano? When Soderbergh was considering Fassbender for the film, he called him up directly and asked, “Do you have a problem punching a woman in the face?” to which Fassbender laughed and replied “I don’t think so.”

Haywire is a Relativity Media film and will be in theaters on January 20, 2012.
