When Katie (Katie Featherstone) and Micha (Micha Sloat), a young couple, move into what seems like a typical suburban “starter” tract house, they become increasingly disturbed by a presence that may or may not be somehow demonic but is certainly most active in the middle of the night. Especially when they sleep. Or try to.

-->
Adapted from the much loved children’s book by Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are takes viewers on an emotionally charged journey of a young boys struggle with life. Tough but fragile Max (Max Records) gets more than he bargains for when he escapes his own reality and stumbles upon a magical island of odd creatures who are unpredictable, and at times, very volatile. Max, an avid storyteller, and in his quest for his own kingdom, claims to be a king of a far off land. Desperate for leadership, the Wild Things crown Max their king in hopes of making their lives better. Unbeknownst to Max, being a king is not an easy task and he has to deal with the repercussions of his actions and promises. His biggest challenge is Carol (James Gandolfini), a loose cannon who is capable of bringing harm to Max and the others on the island.

Recommendation: B+
Writers Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers successfully turn the original story, which is less than a dozen pages, into a full length feature. Technically, musically and visually, the film is right on the mark, especially on IMAX screens, where you feel like the creatures are right in the room with you. Where the Wild Things Are may not be suitable for all young children since the monsters can look a bit scary at times, but it is great for the young at heart.

It’s the 1960′s and Oxford bound Jenny (Carey Mulligan) gets An Education outside the classroom when she meets David (Peter Sarsgaard), a charming older suitor. David introduces 16-year-old Jenny to a life she only dreamed of– smoky clubs, art auctions, expensive dinners and trips to Paris. But her fabulous new lifestyle is affecting her schoolwork, much to the dismay of her teacher, Miss Stubbs (Olivia Williams). Now Jenny must decide whether she will allow herself to be seduced by the good life or continue higher education.

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

Watch the trailer now!

Recommendation: B-
The performances are solid but the story is not. The characters are glossed over and underdeveloped as we only see them on a superficial level. This film could have been better served if it touched a little more on the circumstances in England during that era, and Jenny’s relationships with the main characters, her parents, and her teacher Miss Stubbs. Although Emma Thompson did not have much screen time, her role as the headmistress stands out the most. Still, Carey Mulligan has some of the best written lines in the movie, such as, “The life I want, there’s no shortcut” and “I feel old, but not very wise.”

Don't be afraid to see Zombieland! Just in time for Halloween, this horror-comedy...

It’s about survival of the fittest when you’re a human living in Zombieland. Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) live by their own set of rules to avoid the flesh eating zombies, but can they survive each other?

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

Watch the trailer now!

Columbus is an introvert who has played it safe his whole life and has even developed his own zombie survival guide which includes rules such as always wear your seat belt, double tap, do cardio exercises, and beware of bathrooms. But Columbus has to learn to bend the rules when he meets the fearless Tallahassee, who loves nothing more than killing zombies and trying to find a Twinkie before it expires, and con-artist sisters Wichita and Little Rock who just want to enjoy a day at a theme park.

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

Hear what Emma Stone has to say!

Recommendation: B+
Don’t be afraid to see Zombieland! Just in time for Halloween, this horror-comedy serves up laughs rather than nightmares, making it suitable for most ages. Jesse Eisenberg makes dorkiness lovable and he and Woody Harrelson are well-matched as a mis-matched duo. Eisenberg is definitely one to watch for and first time film director Ruben Fleisher proves that he can handle a big budget movie.

Bruce Willis and Radha Mitchell star in the new sci-fi film based on the popular graphic novel

Life is good when you have a surrogate, at least that’s what humans want to believe. Based on the graphic novel by Robert Venditti and Brett Weldele, Surrogates takes viewers into the not so distant future where humans operate robots from the comfort of their own homes to live their lives. While the majority of mankind functions through their aesthetically pleasing surrogates, a minority group led by The Prophet (Ving Rhames) rejects the idea and reside in a community where surrogates are banned.

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

Watch this clip now!

Through surrogacy, humans feel safe, never having to fear crime or accidents, or feel physical pain. But when someone finds a way to kill operators through their surrogates, FBI Agents Greer (Bruce Willis) and Peters (Radha Mitchell) must find a way to stop the murderer from wiping out all human operators including themselves.

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

Hear what Bruce Willis has to say

Recommendation: B-
Surrogates doesn’t fashion itself after other robot movies with the usual theme of artificial intelligence, and instead is an original and thought-provoking concept. The idea of using surrogacy during war as shown in the film is a good one and would definitely save lives. Other than contemplating how technology impacts our daily lives, Surrogates falls short as a true sci-fi or action film.

Surrogates is produced by Touchstone Pictures and opens in theaters on September 25, 2009.

Recommendation: A
Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs will satisfy all of your cinematic cravings. The film serves up a perfect storm of comedy, story and 3-D animation on a silver platter. Anna Faris may only be heard and not seen, but she once again proves her comedic talent and is perfectly complemented by Bill Hader of Saturday Night Live. The three years spent working on this film was well worth it! The animation comes alive on Imax 3-D screens so well, that you think the food is dropping in on you.

The film also features the voices of Neil Patrick Harris, Mr. T, Andy Samberg, Bruce Campbell, Bobb’e J. Thompson, Benjamin Bratt, Al Roker, Lauren Graham, and Will Forte.

After seeing the film, have a food fight without the mess and cleanup with the new video game. Visit CloudyVideoGame.com for purchase locations and battle out highly mutated food on XBox360, Wii, Nintendo DS, Playstation 3 and more.

Sony Picture’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs mutates onto Imax 3D screens and RealD 3D nationwide on September 18, 2009. Imagery and Animation by Sony Imageworks.

Watch the trailer and learn all about the new cast of Fame!

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

It’s 2009, the year has changed, but the setting remains the same. Based on the Oscar winning 1980 film, Fame chronicles the lives of young talented artists at the prestigious New York City High School of Performing Arts. We follow the students as they sing and dance their way through four years of high school while pursuing their dreams and dealing with the pressures of high school and everything that goes along with being a teenager, including academics, friendships, romance and self-discovery.

So who are these talented young actors playing the role of a lifetime? Here’s a little bit about them.

ASHER BOOK (Marco, singer) began his career at an early age onstage. He got his first break at an open casting call for the theatrical production of Beauty and the Beast as “Chip.” Most of Asher’s experience stems from several years in theater, film, and television. Theatrically, he played the principal role of “Oliver” in Oliver, and he was in the film Come Away Home, the original television movie Pop Rocks, and had guest-starring roles on Medium and Zoey 101. Asher currently performs as a member of the pop vocal group V Factory, which is gearing up to release its debut album on Warner Bros. Records next year. V Factory spent last May on a nationwide trek across the country for the first-ever “Bandemonium” tour.

KRISTY FLORES (Rosie, dancer/actress) is from New York. She began taking ballet, jazz, tap, gymnastics and singing lessons early on in life, and has performed in Texas, at Walt Disney World, and in Las Vegas. In high school Kristy helped form her own dance group, Synergy, and was one of the choreographers, performing all different types of dance, from old school pop lockers and break dancing to fresh urban street jazz. She also joined a local break dancing crew called The Spiders. In high school she also started to write her own poetry and songs. She joined a program called the Vibe Theatre Experience, learning firsthand what teenage girls from different boroughs throughout New York were feeling, acting, dancing, reading poetry and monologues, and singing. Kristy joined The Bronx Dance Theatre and taught in local public schools. While working and teaching, she came across the chance to audition for Fame.

NATURI NAUGHTON (Denise, pianist/singer) was born and raised in East Orange, New Jersey, and started singing in the choir at New Hope Baptist Church when she was just 5 years old. By the time Naturi was 14, her career shifted from local talent to professional recording artist. She became a member of girl band 3LW, and within six months the group had scored a record deal with Sony/Epic Records, eventually achieving a platinum selling album (1.3 million sold). While still a teenager, Naturi toured nationwide with Destiny’s Child, N’SYNC, and had the opportunity to work with such notable producers as P. Diddy and Full Force. Just before her junior year of college, Naturi landed the role of “Little Inez” for the National Touring Company of Hairspray, which led to her Broadway debut in the same role in Hairspray in 2006. Naturi made her film debut in the feature film Notorious playing the role of Lil’ Kim. She is currently working on her own music for her solo project.

PAUL IACONO (Neil, director) is a New Yorker through-and-through, and has performed in over fifty theatrical readings, workshops, and shows. Some of his favorites include Sail Away at Carnegie Hall, Mame at the Papermill Play House, John Guare’s Landscape of the Body, and the Drama Desk Award-winning revival of William Inge’s The Dark at the Top of the Stairs. Paul has appeared in several independent films, including Consent, Glow Ropes, Return to Sleepaway Camp, Winter Solstice, and Parrot Beach. On television, Paul can be heard as the voice of Benny the Bull on Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer. He played Billy Boy in the MTV sketch comedy show Human Giant, and has made appearances on the soap operas Guiding Light, As the World Turns, and Another World. Paul’s other passion is writing. His new play “Price/Elizabeth” recently received its first reading in Manhattan, featuring Taylor Momsen and Connor Paolo of Gossip Girl.

PAUL McGILL (Kevin, dancer) grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and is the youngest of two talented children. As a junior in high school, Paul was cast as an original cast member of the Broadway revival of La Cage aux Folles by Tony-nominated director and choreographer Jerry Zaks and Jerry Mitchell. Paul finished high school and was soon cast in the much acclaimed Broadway revival of A Chorus Line as the impressionable Mark. Paul also starred in the documentary Man on Wire as the title character Philippe Petit.

KAY PANABAKER (Jenny, actress) is recognized by many from her role as angst-filled teen “Nikki Westerly” on the drama Summerland. Younger fans know her work on the Disney Channel, including the telefilm Read It and Weep and a recurring role on Phil of the Future. Currently Kay plays “Lindsey Willows,” daughter of Marg Helgenberger’s character on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, while recent guest appearances include Medium, Ghost Whisperer, Boston Legal, Two and a Half Men, and Weeds. Last year, Kay was seen on the big screen playing best friend “George” to girl sleuth Nancy Drew in the feature film adaptation of the classic book series, and was later seen on the small screen in Lifetime’s Custody alongside Rob Morrow and James Denton. She plays the title character in Moondance Alexander, an award-winning family film that also stars Lori Loughlin and Don Johnson. She was also recognized in 2007 for her performance in the Dylan and Cole Sprouse film A Modern Twain Story: The Prince and the Pauper.

KHERINGTON PAYNE (Alice, dancer) was born and raised in Orange County. As a two-year old in diapers, she couldn’t wait to begin dance lessons. Kherington also had a great love for soccer, and although it was challenging to balance both, she found a way. On top of dance and athletics, she also found time to take acting lessons and modeling jobs for Nike, McDonald’s, Limited Too, Mattel, Amy Byer, and Disney. When Kherington turned 18, she was determined to audition for So You Think You Can Dance. After being accepted onto the show, she made it as a “Top 10” contestant.

COLLINS PENNIÉ (Malik, actor/rapper) was born in 1987 in Brooklyn, New York, and spent half of his childhood in numerous foster homes. Collins moved out on his own at the age of 15; he was an ordinary kid who quickly realized he wanted more out of life than what the Brooklyn projects had to offer. Collins’ undeniable talent and determination were quickly noticed, and after only six month in the business he landed his first role playing Sean on the hit daytime drama As the World Turns. Two months later Collins landed a guest-starring role as “Jimmy Gordon” on the hit show Law & Order, and then played a drug addicted thief on Without a Trace. His television work caught the attention of world-renowned Ford Model Management, who signed Collins. Soon after he was chosen to be a part of the successful “ck One” fragrance campaign for Calvin Klein. To date, Pennie has a number of films under his belt, including All Fall Down, the Oscar nominated Half Nelson, Prom Night, and Fired Up.

WALTER PEREZ (Victor, musician/composer) was raised in South Gate, California, 20 miles southeast of Hollywood. He has booked several commercials and various guest star spots on prime time television shows. Most recently, Walter’s guest appearances include CSI: Miami, The Closer, and Free Radio, as well as a five-episode arc on Friday Night Lights. His feature film credits include HBO’s Walkout and August Evening, winner of the John Cassavetes award. He just completed the title role in Emilio and worked on Run For Your Life alongside Dermot Mulroney and Diane Kruger.

ANNA MARIA PEREZ DE TAGLE (Joy, actress) was born in Northern California. She developed her love for theater and began training in singing, dancing and acting by starring in regional productions of Cinderalla, Bugsy Malone, and The King and I. She kept busy by modeling for several catalogs, including Macy’s and Mervyns. After begging her parents to let her try out, Anna Maria booked her 1st audition, winning her role on Disney’s hit Hannah Montana as Ashley Dewitt, a ditsy fashionista who has no idea that her nemesis, Miley, is really her favorite performer, Hannah Montana. Since hitting Los Angeles, Anna Maria has graced the small screen numerous times with roles in Bee Season, the morning show Cake, and Just Jordan, and provides the voice of the Martha, the Safety Patrol Kid, in Higglytown Heroes. Dutton as Alvin Dowd, Kelsey Grammer as Joel Cranston, Megan Mullally as Fran Rowan, and Bebe Neuwirth as Lynn Kraft.

Follow Jimmy Page, The Edge and Jack White as they create magic with the electric guitar

What does a furniture upholsterer from Detroit, a studio musician and painter from London, and a seventeen-year-old Dublin schoolboy have in common? From the director of the Oscar winning film, An Inconvenient Truth, Davis Guggenheim takes viewers on a musical journey with three generations of rockers in It Might Get Loud. This rockumentary chronicles the evolution of the electric guitar through the likes of Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), The Edge (U2) and Jack White (The White Stripes), who come together to share their stories and experiences. The cameras follow the men to their origins and influential locations that shaped their music as audiences hear legendary sounds and new music from each artist.

Thomas Tull, producer of The Dark Knight and Watchmen, explains why he chose Page, The Edge and White for his film. “It was almost like casting a movie. We wanted to show a wide range of styles and eras by focusing on three of the best players in the world, from three generations… and they said yes! Like many kids, I had a poster of Jimmy Page on my wall– he is a living legend. U2 is one of the greatest bands ever, and The Edge is a brilliant and distinctive player. Jack White is the new generation– cutting his own path but also keeping the guitar, and great guitar traditions, alive.”

Recommendation: B+
It was impressive to watch three very different generations interact with each other. Learning about their history while their music is played during the film, just shows how deeply influential their sound is today.

It Might Get Loud is a Sony Pictures Classics release and opens in New York and Los Angeles on August 14, 2009.

Starring Charlyne Yi and Michael Cera, Paper Heart is not your traditional romantic documentary. Teaming up with friend and director Nicholas Jasenovec, Charlyne embarks on an epic cross-country adventure to ask Americans the simple question of “Does true love really exist,” believing herself that it is only found in fairy tales. Along the way, she meets for the first time actor Michael Cera, and an unlikely romance begins to blossom. As their relationship grows stronger, the answer to her question becomes even more important than ever.

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

Recommendation: B+
Very original and creative, Paper Heart is a heartwarming film that will surely captivate audiences and give them the opportunity to look into their own hearts, and fall in love all over again. The film has everything that an independent should have. It feels raw and rough around the edges, which brings you closer into the story and characters, and breathes life into the piece. A great flick for those who believe that true love may really exist.

Paper Heart is produced by Overture Films and opens in select theaters August 7, 2009 and expands on August 14, 2009.
