It was eighteen years ago that we first met two young strangers, Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke) talk about love and life in less than 24 hours in Before Sunrise. Nine years later, Celine drops by Jesse’s book signing in Paris and they reminisce about that one eventful night and their lives since then in Before Sunset. Another nine years have gone by, and we find Celine and Jesse, now in their early 40′s on holiday in Greece in Before Midnight.
When I first learned that Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke were reprising the roles of Celine and Jesse in Before Midnight, the sequel to Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, I could not wait to see the latest chapter in their story. The wait was well worth it– Before Midnight did not disappoint. While many films fail with sequels, this film does not, it has the same charm and honesty as its predecessors. Just like the other two films, the dialogue seems to flow naturally, even though Delpy and Hawke co-wrote the script with the film’s director Richard Linklater. Let’s just hope that this is not a trilogy!
