Wow– what beautiful hair you have

By Sara Moore

New York facial plastic surgeon Dr. Yael Halaas, has found great success with surgical hair restoration which takes donor hair from other areas of the head and moves it to the thinning or balding areas. “The vast majority of women experience thinning hair when they hit menopause, but unlike men who thin in the front, women get diffuse thinning around the entire head so it can be a challenge to find a donor area,” she says. This procedure can be costly at $4000 and up, depending on how many grafts are needed, but the results are permanent.

According to Dr. Halaas, tight braids and extensions pull on the hair which can also result in hair loss. “This type of hair loss is called Traction Alopecia which we see often on African-American women,” she says. She also advises against using Propecia to regrow hair because it is not FDA approved and can cause dangerous hormone levels in women.

Don’t need surgery, but still need help. Check out the new pHormulate hair care line. This anti-aging system uses ChromaGuard technology to restore moisture bonds which are lost during the aging process, resulting in dull and lifeless hair. The line consists of an ammonia free coloring system and styling products that contain natural ingredients such as sage, rosemary, chamomile, lemongrass and goldenseal which are combined with the ChromaGuard technology to reverse the signs of aging hair.

Maybe you’re just not using the right brush. The Olivia Garden Healthy Hair bamboo brushes not only help detangle and style hair, but they can be used to massage your scalp, which stimulates blood flow, resulting in hair growth and reduced hair loss.

Kate Hudson Goes Wild for David Babaii

By Abbey Khan

Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii, whose clients include Angelina Jolie and Kate Hudson, is doing his part to save our planet. He’s teamed up with Kate Hudson to bring his new haircare line David Babaii for WildAid. This new line is inspired by the beauty of nature and includes natural ingredients such as sandalwood and cucumber fruit extract. And best of all, it’s tested on Kate, not on animals!

David Babaii

David tells us how we can get Kate’s signature style– The Bohemian Wave using his products. “It’s all about 4 main signature stages: drying, sectioning, curling and styling,” he says. First, spray the entire head with David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray and scrunch it into the hair. This gives just the right texture and movement. “I always like rough drying her hair using my hands, moving the hair in various directions until it’s dry.”

Once dry, section the hair into 3 different parts. This is vital because it gives you constant control of hair at all times. David uses 3-4 different size ceramic curling irons to create Kate’s classic bohemian wave. Taking small “V” shaped strands, wrap the hair around the outside of the closed barrel, leaving the ends free. He then runs his fingers up the partially curled strand to get a dramatic wild finish. For additional lift or volume at the scalp area, use David Babaii for WildAid Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier. “To complete the look, I spray more of the Bohemian Beach Spray and have Kate flip her head down and over.”

David Babaii for WildAid further supports the beauty in nature by donating ten percent of all profits to WildAid, the global wildlife conservation organization. For store locations, visit db4WildAid.com.

Va-Va-Voom Hair

By Abbey Khan

You have the perfect dress and makeup for Valentine’s Day, but what about the hair? MyFoxLA contest winner for best hair color and celebrity stylist Marco Pelusi whose clients include Carol Alt and Stacey Kiebler shows us how to go from day to va-va-voom!

  • marco_headshot.jpg

Pretty fine texture and color treated hair like the model below needs some moisture and color. Try Marco Color Bodifying Shampoo, then apply a tiny bit of leave-in conditioner before combing through hair. Add a little bit of Marco Color Control Gel to add some fullness and style as usual for your day look.

  • Now it’s time to transform your hair for that romantic dinner for two. Use a large ceramic barrel curling iron (1-1.5″ in diameter) such as Babyliss for medium to long hair. Take ¾” in diameter and spray 1-2 mists of a flexible working lightweight hairspray such as Marco Color Guard Hairspray. Use a curling iron immediately and hold the curl for a few seconds. Repeat 10-12 sections for mid-length hair and let the curls set for a few minutes while getting dressed. Run hands through hair and if desired use the hairspray for a final spritz. This look only takes 15 minutes.

If you’re in your 20’s or 30’s, grab one side of hair and put in a decorative barette. Leave a few pieces hanging out and put the rest of the hair in a low ponytail for a more elegant feel.

All hair care products can be found at MarcoPelusi.com.
