Get Financially Naked

financebook.jpg In a committed relationship? Don’t depend on your partner to handle your money. Personal finance experts Manisha Thakor and Sharon Kedar share their top 3 tips from their new book On My Own Two Feet: A Modern Girl’s Guide to Personal Finance.

Reveal yourself financially. Too many couples do not know or incorrectly assume their partner’s financial priorities. Instead, get all the facts so there are no surprises down the road. Talk openly about spending habits, saving habits, investment plans, and ideal situations for retirement.

Divide up your financial house chores. Create a mutually agreed upon financial game plan that includes designating financial chores such as balancing the checkbook, looking into investments, and managing savings. Then set aside specific times for check-ups and discussions.

Protect yourself. Unfortunately, love may not last forever and Prince Charming may not really have the keys to the financial castle. Become financially literate, stable and independent. Start off by getting at least one credit card that lists you as the primary account holder.
