Green Chic: Saving the Earth in Style
Go green without sacrificing your lifestyle! Author Christie Matheson shows us how we can become eco-friendly mavens in her new must-read book Green Chic: Saving the Earth in Style.

Fashion
Cotton: Buy organic cotton which is grown without pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Translation— it won’t seep into the air, water, or your skin. Check out American Apparel tees and the new organic denim line from Levi’s.
Wool: Look for wool that hasn’t been chemically treated or dyed. You can also buy non-dyed wool in natural colors or wool that has been dyed with dirt or clay dyes. Try John Patrick Organic and Indigenous Designs. Another alternative is alpaca wool—it’s naturally softer and stronger than regular wool and uses less chemical treatment when conventionally produced.
Linen: Look for high-quality, 100% linen that hasn’t been blended with synthetics or nonorganic cotton. Go to Beklina.com for great linen pieces.
Silk: This is a win-win. It’s actually one of the most eco-friendly fabrics since it is renewable and biodegradable. Check out CoolNotCruel.com.

Beauty
Mani-pedi: Use brands that are free of toluene, phthalates, and formaldehyde such as Spa Ritual (SpaRitual.com) or Firoze.
Hair: Skip shampoos and conditioners with ingredients that include formaldehyde, bronopol, parabens, and sodium laurel sulfate. These toxic chemicals go straight into your bloodstream and are not detoxified by the liver. Instead try Vanilla & Sweet Orange Shampoo from Hugo, and shampoos and conditioners from Burt’s Bees (burtsbees.com) and John Masters Organics.
***General rule: if you can’t pronounce it, don’t buy it.
Home and Lifestyle
Furniture: Refurbish or reupholster furniture you already own.
Napkins: Choose cloth napkins and reusable rags instead of recycled paper towels and paper napkins. Try Ortolan napkins or Libeco linen napkins.

Oscar suites ‘08- what celebs got
Celebrities who visited the WOW! Creations Lifestyle Oscar Gift Lounge at the Hyatt hotel in West Hollywood were greeted with Vera Bradley bags to put their goodies in. They filled up on beauty products such as gift certificates to SmileWorks, the first medical and dental spa in Redondo Beach where stars can rejuvenate their skin and their smile; the Nail Art Diva Diva Basics Kit to decorate nails in different colors and designs at home; and skin and body products from Pure Body, an all natural, eco-friendly line that includes Citrus Body Butter, Lavendar Avocado Oil for Hair & Skin, and Anise flavored Shea Butter Lip Balm. South Beach Skincare gave away Anti-Wrinkle Lotion to prevent and repair wrinkles and Saphoros Spa Essentials had three different skincare lines to choose from one of which included Organic Pumpkin Mask, Botanical toner, Organic lip balm & lip scrub. After receiving all these fabulous beautifying gifts, they stepped into the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy chamber to help detoxify their bodies of toxins.

When it came to food and drinks, there was quite a selection too. Celebs like reality star Omarosa snacked on Corazonas heart healthy chips, which are delicious and help lower cholesterol; fruits covered in Valrhona chocolate from Fruits to Remember, and took home Fudge is my Life chocolate sauces. Then they washed it all down with alcohol from The Margarita King, or Goji Grand Liquer which uses real Goji to help improve vision, strengthen liver function, and reduce cholesterol and blood pressure. If they weren’t drinking, they re-energized with Java Monster, the new coffee flavored drink from Monster Energy Drink, which has the caffeine of regular coffee but twice the buzz, or replenished with Hint Water and took home some True Lemon powder mix that can be added to water to make lemonade or used for teas and other delicious recipes requiring a fresh lemon taste.

Artists Rose Yoko and Sonya Paz showed off their distinct works. Yoko gifted beautiful headbands and barrettes while Paz showcased her art on mugs, dog dishes and other items. Celebs also picked up beaded bracelets in a variety of colors from Jewelry Television and Prensus adjustable purse hangers so they’ll never have to place their designer bags on the floor ever again.

At the 9900 Club in Beverly Hills, Debbie Durkin held her annual Main Event Red Carpet Lounge where celebrities walked away with gifts for themselves and their pets. Diedre Hall of Days of Our Lives took home bead and gemstone jewelry from Alyse Ziede, one-of-a-kind handmade pieces using Mother of Pearl, Swarovski crystals, and semi-precious stones from Heather Hyde, Michelle Roy jewelry and luxury watches from Curtis & Co.

Mix It Up With 42 Below
Show off your bartending skills with these holiday mixers from 42 Below.

Baby, It’s 42 Below Outside
In this cocktail, flavors like orange and fresh grapes add richness, cranberry and promengranate contain high levels of Vitamin C, and falernum or almond syrup adds a touch of exotic complexity.
Ingredients
1 part 42 Below Pure vodka
1 part pomegranate juice
1 teaspoon of cranberry or blueberry jelly
4 seedless red grapes
1 dash of Falernum or almond syrup
1 wedge of orange
In a cocktail shaker, muddle together the jelly with the grapes and orange wedge. Add vodka, syrup and juice, and fill with ice. Shake sharply, and strain into a chilled Martini glass.
42 Below Christmaka
Eggnog- bah humbug! The pumpkin flavor is much better and richer, while the vanilla and cream balance the bite of ginger and the smoky flavors of 42 Below Manuka Honey vodka.
Ingredients:
1 part 42 Below Honey vodka
1 part pumpkin puree, or cooked and finely mashed pumpkin
2 parts cream
2 teaspoons of vanilla sugar
Squeeze of fresh orange
Slice of ginger, finely diced
Pinch of cinnamon
Fresh black pepper to garnish
In a cocktail shaker, muddle together the pumpkin and ginger with the cinnamon and vanilla sugar. Add vodka, squeeze the juice from a small orange wedge, and fill with ice. Add cream, shake vigorously, and strain into a chilled Martini glass. Garnish with a grind of fresh black pepper.
Rudolph the Red Nosed Cocktail
This modern twist on ‘mulled wine’ has a rich aroma and a warm, satisfying flavor. Serve in a cocktail glass, or a large earthenware mug if feeling rustic, and curl up in front of the fire.
Ingredients:
1 part 42 Below Pure vodka
4 parts dark grape juice
6 morello cherries, pitted
1 teaspoon of vanilla sugar
1 orange wedge
1 clove
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan, over a very low heat, stirring gently. Once the mixture begins to steam slowly, take off the heat and stand for a minute. Fine-strain to remove orange, clove and cherries, into a cocktail glass, and garnish with a cherry.

Say No to Holiday Pounds!
Don’t let the holidays ruin your diet! Fresh Dining, Southern California’s fresh meal delivery service shares their ten top tips to eating great without packing on the pounds.

Eat less over the days leading into the celebration, and you will have some extra room for dessert.
No mindless snacking. Pay attention to what you eat and set limits. Snacking on auto-pilot will leave you full, tired and uninterested in exercise.
Limit the booze to a drink or two. Stick to light beer or clear alcohol mixed with diet beverage mixers.
Stay away from eggnog and you won’t have to worry about trying to burn off those calories in 2008.
Practice portion control. It’s fine to indulge, but eat sensibly-sized portions and don’t go back for seconds or thirds.
Don’t be force-fed by letting your family and friends guilt you into eating the endless array of desserts. Just tell them you’ll have a couple of bites because you’re watching your weight.
Stick with protein and vegetables if there are a variety of dishes to choose from.
Snack on fruit instead of holiday cookies to preserve your waistline.
Learn to cook healthy by using less sugar and butter or sugar substitutes when possible.
Exercise. Getting in a workout or two or even a couple of brisk walks daily will help burn calories.
