Movie Review: Barney’s Version

For the first time in his life, Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti) is in love. But there’s one big problem, it’s at his own wedding. Still, this doesn’t stop Barney from pursuing Miriam, (Rosamund Pike), whom he ends up marrying and having two beautiful children with. But Barney and his life aren’t perfect– he gets drunk at pivotal moments, missing out on events important to his family; he is accused of murdering his best friend Boogie (Scott Speedman); and he competes with another man for his wife’s affection.
Recommendation: A+
Barney’s Version is an unconventional yet beautiful love story told with humor and emotion. Paul Giamatti and Rosamund Pike are flawless and perfectly matched as Barney and Miriam. Giamatti, as always, is deserving of his Golden Globe nomination and through her voice, Pike is intoxicating. The film is long at 132 minutes but worth every minute.
Barney’s Version is a Sony Pictures Classics film and is based on Mordecai Richler’s award-winning novel of the same name. The film also stars Dustin Hoffman and Minnie Driver and opens in select theaters on Friday, January 14, 2011.
