Movie Review: Chloe

Dr. Catherine Stewart (Julianne Moore), a successful Toronto-based gynecologist, suspects her very flirtatious husband David (Liam Neeson), a music professor, of having extra marital affairs. When Catherine discovers an incriminating text message from a female student the morning after he misses his flight home from New York and the surprise birthday party she planned for him, she hires Chloe (Amanda Seyfried), a beautiful young escort, to test David’s fidelity. Chloe promptly reports to Catherine and describes her sexual encounters with David, but when Catherine asks her to stay out of their lives for good, Chloe becomes more than she can handle and must be stopped before she ends up destroying her family.
Recommendation: B-
Since Chloe is a remake of the 2004 French film Nathalie, it would be interesting to see how toned down director Atom Egoyan had to make this film for American audiences. Chloe is a complicated character– innocent and vulnerable, yet deceitful and obsessive. At times Seyfried nails her portrayal of Chloe, but her performance is for the most part erratic and in turn reveals certain plot twists that you may have otherwise not seen coming. While the film is somewhat predictable, it is fun to watch and definitely a guilty pleasure.
Chloe is a Sony Pictures Classics film and will be in select movie theaters on March 26, 2010. It is Rated: R for strong sexual content including graphic dialogue, nudity and language.
