Movie Review: Robin Hood

Before he became Robin Hood, he was expert archer Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe), who was sentenced to death by King Richard (Danny Huston) for his opposing thoughts on the King’s Crusade. When Richard dies in battle, Robin delivers his crown to his mother and brother Prince John (Oscar Isaac) as proof of his death, and then travels to Nottingham, to tell Lady Marion (Cate Blanchett) that her husband died in battle as well. Robin soon falls for Marion and forms a bond with Marion’s father-in-law Sir Walter Loxley (Max von Sydow) who becomes a father-figure to him. When word gets out that France is secretly invading England, Robin leaves Marion behind to save his country.
Recommendation: C
The film is visually appealing due to Ridley Scott’s directing, but the story is confusing and not fully developed. The two-hour film is just really one battle scene after another and may appeal to anyone only interested in action sequences. The talents of Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe were wasted in this prequel — Blanchett’s character was not thoroughly flushed out, making her look more like a supporting actress than the lead, and Crowe barely had any speaking parts. If Scott decides to do a sequel, hopefully he will stay true to the original story.
Robin Hood is a Universal Pictures film that is directed by Ridley Scott and will be in theaters on May 14, 2010.
