Movie Review: Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer

Scandals and affairs are nothing new in politics, so why was the case of former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer any different? Because he could have been the first Jewish President of the United States. Of course, all that changed when the New York Times exposed Spitzer as a client of a high-end escort service.

In Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer, director Alex Gibney speaks to Spitzer’s colleagues, enemies, the owners of the escort service, and Spitzer himself. As New York’s Attorney General, Spitzer was considered a hero, earning him the nickname The Sheriff of Wall Street, for prosecuting the most powerful executives from the country’s largest financial institutions. But his heroics also earned him enemies who were planning their revenge.

When news of Spitzer’s illicit use of prostitutes broke, his supporters questioned the timing of it all. Was it a coincidence that Spitzer’s downfall occurred at the same time the financial markets fell?

Recommendation: B-
The documentary is surprisingly humorous and light with a colorful cast and an array of characters. Sometimes you wonder if these people are truly themselves or if they are playing it up for the camera. Spitzer does talk about his downfall and his involvement with the escort service but does not reveal too much. When he is interviewed, he seems neither genuine nor apologetic, only sorry that he got caught.

Gibney, an Oscar winning filmmaker appears to be biased, portraying Spitzer in a positive light, rather than remaining impartial, which makes me believe that Spitzer is not done with politics and that this film is the start of rebuilding his political career.

Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer opens in select theaters in New York on November 5, 2010 and in Los Angeles on November 12, 2010 with a national roll-out to follow.
