Have a closet full of clothes, but can’t find anything to wear. Well, maybe its because you have too many clothes you just don’t need. Elena Bertinetto, interior designer and co-owner of tells us how to organize our closets.

If you haven’t worn something in your closet in the last 2 years, get rid of it. Keep only what you really love (evening gowns) and what you look fabulous in. First, take everything out of your closet. Then, clean out your closet thoroughly. Finally, look at each item one by one.

Separate what you keep into different piles. Tees, tops, sleepwear, underwear, coats, pants, etc.

Sort everything by color, thickness, and season.

Lingerie for special occassions should go into the back of the drawer while the front is for everyday use. Separate lingerie/underwear by color so it is easy to find.

Put t-shirts, tops, and pajamas in drawers.

Hang items by size. It should go from shortest to longest. Shirts, jackets, pants, and skirts should be one one side of the closet. Longer dresses and evening gowns on the other.

Place accessories on shelves. This includes purses, gloves, pashminas, scarves, etc. Roll scarves so they are easier to pull out.

Hang belts on one side of your closet door.

Store seasonal items in big transparent plastic bags. Put in a box with a bar of soap for added freshness.
